December 10, the opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to the defend human rights

Human Rights Day is commemorated every December 10th and it is a call to reflect on the achievements in the field of rights and the persistent challenges humanity faces in the pursuit of justice and equality. The commemoration of this day takes place on the day the United Nations General Assembly issued the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948.

This document emphasizes that rights are inalienable and inherent to all human beings, without distinction of race, color, religion, sex, language, political opinion, or any other kind, including sexual orientation and health conditions such as HIV. The UDHR marked a historic milestone by establishing a common standard of fundamental rights for all individuals and has served as a beacon of hope in the fight against oppression and discrimination. Each year, a slogan is chosen to call attention to and address the most important needs in the world. In 2023, the theme is Freedom, Equality and Justice for All.

Through various research actions, Asociación PASMO has found evidence of the barriers that populations vulnerable to HIV face in preventing and treating the virus. These investigations identify challenges related to the human rights of these populations, such as stigma and discrimination, which not only affect the physical and mental health of people with HIV but also their ability to fully enjoy their basic rights.

Within the framework of human rights, people living with HIV have the right to equality, non-discrimination, privacy of their information, and freedom of expression without fear of reprisals. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights guarantees access to healthcare, education, and employment without discrimination, rights that people living with HIV often see violated.

As part of its actions and activities to respond to the structural barriers faced by vulnerable populations to access HIV prevention and care services, Asociaición PASMO, through local NGOs, implements the “Espacios Libres” strategy at a community level to sensitize and mobilize communities in the areas of social inclusion, beginning with information about HIV, gender, sexual diversity, and human rights.

By advocating for human rights for all people, we contribute to building a more fair, inclusive, and respectful world for human diversity. On this day, Asociación PASMO joins the call for Freedom, Equality and Justice for All, working every day to change behaviors and improve the lives of vulnerable populations so they can live a life enjoying the exercise of their human rights.
