Anait\u00e9 looks out of the window while the rain is pouring. When the rainy season starts in Guatemala y para ella es inevitable pensar en todo lo que implica la lluvia para las personas que viven en contextos de vulnerabilidad, desde derrumbes y p\u00e9rdidas materiales hasta enfermedades respiratorias como el Dengue que afectan severamente la salud. Para Anait\u00e9 ayudar a los dem\u00e1s es su deber y lo hace desde su profesi\u00f3n como epidemi\u00f3loga.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe as healthcare workers have fallen in love with public health because we aim to improve people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Anait\u00e9\u2019s job is to analyze the epidemiologic data obtained from research that she has overseen. She spends more time studying research about arboviruses, they are transmitted by mosquitoes and its dangerous for people\u2019s health. Her position as epidemiologist in the Public Health Ministry allows her to monitor information about Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya in Guatemala.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not just numbers on a page. We are talking about human lives\u201d , <\/em>says Anait\u00e9 while she recalls the case of an 8-year-old child whose father was a doctor and his mother a nurse and they treated his high fever without knowing that the cause of the fever was Dengue. As his high fevers did not subside after many days, he was finally tested for Dengue and found to be positive. By then, he was admitted to the hospital where he died days later. For Anait\u00e9, this story only highlights the importance of early detection and treatment of Dengue and similar diseases.<\/p>\n

\u201cNowadays, no one should die from Dengue!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

En 2021, en el contexto de la pandemia provocada por el COVID-19, Anait\u00e9 fue invitada por Asociaci\u00f3n PASMO<\/a> para formar parte de un equipo multidisciplinario para desarrollar y actualizar una campa\u00f1a acerca de Dengue, Zika y Chikungunya con el apoyo de la Agencia de los Estados Unidos para el Desarrollo Internacional (USAID). PASMO invit\u00f3 a representantes de varias oficinas del Ministerio de Salud incluyendo la oficina de educaci\u00f3n y promoci\u00f3n de la salud (PROEDUSA), Epidemiolog\u00eda y Comunicaci\u00f3n Social, as\u00ed como la agencia de publicidad de PASMO. Todos los equipos trabajaron juntos para revisar la informaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s reciente para desarrollar y actualizar los mensajes y materiales para una nueva campa\u00f1a de prevenci\u00f3n que buscar\u00eda aumentar el acceso de la poblaci\u00f3n a servicios de prevenci\u00f3n y cuidado durante la pandemia.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is so much value in reviewing the data and turning that into education and prevention\u201d,<\/em> expresa Anait\u00e9 con una sonrisa. Ella ha facilitado muchas sesiones de tendencias epidemiol\u00f3gicas e informaci\u00f3n acerca del Dengue, Zika y Chikungunya, tambi\u00e9n conoc\u00eda los retos sociales, econ\u00f3micos y de lenguaje que se enfrentar\u00edan durante la planeaci\u00f3n e implementaci\u00f3n de la campa\u00f1a, aspectos que aunque eran un reto, ella acept\u00f3 con mucho entusiasmo, ya que esta oportunidad era \u00fanica en su clase: podr\u00eda enfocarse en prevenci\u00f3n para evitar enfermedades<\/a> o p\u00e9rdida de vidas humanas. \u201cWe spend so much time working to cure patients, but it was rewarding to finally have the chance to work on promoting prevention communication.\u201d<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n
