Undetectable = Untransmittable means Your Life can Continue
As part of World AIDS Day 2024, Asociación PASMO launches the communication strategy and campaign “Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U) means Your life can continue”. This campaign, grounded in social marketing and communication for social and behavior change, aims to convey hope, life and a healthy future for people living with HIV. In the simplest of terms, by initiating and remaining in treatment, the levels of HIV in a person’s system can become so low that the virus is considered “undetectable” in certain lab tests, and the person can no longer transmit the virus to their sexual partners or contacts, thus becoming “untransmittable”.
Specifically, the campaign, which is part of a broader strategy to integrate the U=U message into various interventions involving users, their immediate support networks, health services, and society, aims to address gaps across the HIV cascade. Therefore, the messages and healthy behaviors promoted by the campaign include:
- Get tested for HIV: Knowing your HIV status allows for timely action.
- Start treatment: If you receive a positive result, it is important to begin treatment as soon as possible.
- Take your treatment consistently and correctly: People who adhere to their treatment maintain the virus at levels so low it cannot be detected by certain laboratory tests and can no longer be transmitted.
These messages will be disseminated through mass media and digital platforms during 2024 and 2025. In parallel, a comprehensive strategy will be implemented, including educational and interactive kits and sessions focused on healthcare providers and other stakeholders. These sessions will equip providers with tools to better transmit Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U) concepts and messages with users of HIV prevention, linkage, and/or treatment services in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Panama.
